Raising Funds

As a puppy raiser for a young non-profit, our first obligation is to raise an obedient and confident puppy. Our second job is fund raising and promoting OccuPaws. This week Monte attended three fund raising events at HuHot, Ruffin' It Resort, and Boston Store. Some view these events as a necessary evil to fund our cause, but in my view these events serve a dual role by providing opportunities to work our puppies in social situations. We attend as many as we possibly can.

The event/party at Ruffin' It Resort this week was different than most because along with the usual interactions with humans, we practiced canine interactions - costumed canines. Thirty minutes before the event, we made a quick stop for a dog costume. Looking for a halo or devil horns (more appropriate), we found none. We haphazardly selected some blue hair dye, glow in the dark, and painted spots on Monte; the dye wasn't even dry before we left the house. As expected the contest was held in a well-lit environment and Monte simply looked like he dislodged a gallon of blue paint from a shelf, splattering him as it hit the ground.

Needless to say, Monte did not win any prize for the costume contest, however, he excelled at bobbing for hot dogs. It took him about a second to retrieve the sausage from the bottom of the bowl. Casey, on the other hand, cautiously moved the hot dog to the surface before gracefully retrieving it, always the lady.

One of our favorite events is "selling" Bon-Ton coupon books for Community Day. Weeks prior to the sale, we are allowed to "sell" coupons at the store entrance. I place the "sell" in quotes because my objectives are to share a smile petting puppies and be an ambassador for OccuPaws by talk about OccuPaws and explaining puppy raising. With every interaction we achieve these objectives and if we sell a coupon book even better.

Two hours disappear in the blink of an eye. It's so much fun, I would do this all day if they would let us.

It's My Birthday!

Hey Pups!

It's my birthday today! I'm now one year old ~ together with my OccuPaws siblings Maddi, Sonny, Finley, and Sparta. We'll have to have a party at our Thursday night training class! I'll help my mommy make cupcakes so we can celebrate.

I even got a dog wash so I'll be nice and clean for the party (Thanks, Animart, for providing dog washes for OccuPaws dogs!)

What a busy week this has been! I almost got a ride in the UW Med Flight helicopter, at Lakeview Park, at the Middleton Police National Night Out.

I had to jump out quickly 'cause the helicopter then took off. There were hundreds of kids there to give me lots of petting, and I even met some of the Police K-9 dogs. They were also very well trained!

On Saturday I helped volunteer at the National Mustard Day in Middleton. There were hundreds of kids there! I attracted all the kids to our table, and my mommy sold them Mustard Day t-shirts. We work good together as a team! I got to meet the Klements sausages (they race around the diamond at Brewers games, but for some reason they don't smell like sausages....)

and Culver's Scoopie, who brought "Mustard Custard," but I couldn't have any. I met the Mustard Girl, too,

and the biggest weiner in the world, the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile! His license plate said "YUMMY."

All that work all day and I still didn't get a sausage....but my mommy said I was a VERY good girl and gave me some yummy treats before bed.

Your pal,

Casey

Out & About

Hi all! Wilbur here.

Once again, my mom says that I have not been writing enough. Well, I tried to tell her that I have been too busy to write!

Did you know that we are having a Scavenger Hunt with motorcycles in August? What do we do try to find the motorcycles?? Wednesday last week we went to Quaker Steak and Lube in Middleton to tell everybody about it! Motorcycle people are SO nice.

On another day, mom, dad, Harley and I rode around in the car for miles - - stopping and writing down questions on pieces of paper - - something about “That’s a good question”. On the route, we went all the way to Finn’s and had a GREAT lunch on the deck. At Finn’s there were these cute little duckies with writing on them. Something about a rubber duckie race down the Rock River. All I know is I did not get ANYTHING to eat. (Grrrr) We did our usual meet and greet at Mounds on Saturday. Lots of nice people. Our table is set up right next to a display of bones. But, mom would not let Harley or I have any.

Then yesterday (Sunday) we went back to Finns and saw more of those cute little Duckies. Casey, Marlette, Amy and Hailey drove down with us too.

Guess what? At Finns, we met MORE of our friends: cute little Lori, Timber, Banjo, Sonni, and Monte. We were all trying to ask people to buy the cute little duckies and to come for the race August 28.

Ta Ta for now!

Ducks for Dogs

On Sunday Maddi went to Fin's in Newville and sold rubber duckies for the Ducks for Dogs on August 28th. There were a lot of dogs there. We had a great time selling duckies and meeting all the people. We also got to meet the newest puppy, Lori. She is a sweetie.

Pups on Parmenter

Woof ~

Hey pups! Are you ready for our big Dog Walk on Saturday? It's called Puppies on Parmenter, and it's a big fund raiser for all of us OccuPaws pups in training. There are 24 of us pups now, so we need lots of support from dog lovers to help us become great Guide Dogs when we grow up!

I'm busy helping my mommy organize all the great Raffle Prizes and Silent Auction items. Guess what I found! A big yellow box of "Dog-gone Best Mustards." Wonder if that's for us dogs....

And maybe my mommy won't notice if I sneak a hot dog outta here....

See you all on Saturday! Capital Brewery in Middleton, 11 am - 3 pm!

Miss Wisconsin

Hey pups ~

What an exciting weekend this has been! First I was hangin' out at Warner Park watching all the baby geese,

and then I got to hang out with Miss Wisconsin! Can you tell which one of us is Miss Wisconsin?

Awww....I need a ribbon that says "Miss OccuPaws Wisconsin", don't ya think? Anyway, she was very pretty and nice to hang around with.

Then I met my puppy friends and two graduate dogs, Dale and Divit, at Culver's in Middleton where we practiced giving nice greetings to all the customers. Culver's was very happy 'cause we brought in lots of new customers to eat custard. They didn't give any to us pups, tho ~ but we did get to be interviewed by the WKOW Channel 27 folks, who thought we pups were pretty cute. Can't let that go to our heads, now....

Get Your Custard Fix

Woof Fellow Custard Lovers,

A whole bunch of my pals came to help be be cute and adorable at an OccuPaws fund-raiser at Culver's in Middleton. If a whole lotta humans stuffed themselves silly and ate lots and lots, OccuPaws will get some green stuff that humans really seem to love. There were lots of people there and the food smelled great so I'm sure they had a lot. We, on the other hand just got to sit under signs and stuff.

Some of us became movie stars. You can watch us by clicking here on Channel 27!!
All for now,
Harley

Dog Den Blast

Woof fellow black dogs...we rule!!!!

Shepherds and Goldens quake in our dust!!!

Oh, wait, water-break...ahhh.

We all had a great time playing at the Dog Den Saturday morning. Pictures were a little difficult as most turned out to be blurry streaks. We were all pretty well behaved with only a few "unnecessary roughness" penalties and time outs. Poor Harley and Louie were on injured reserve...Harley was just neutered and Louie had a bit of a limp so he didn't get to play either. The humans just stood around and blah blah blah until a pack of labs broke up the talking.

I'll admit, I'm no Lab either and enjoyed some quiet time with Kotah.

There are some more pictures posted here.

All for now,
Wilbur

All Mixed Up!

Hope I am doing this right! Never wrote a blog before! First dropped off Finley Friday. Suppose to get Casey but got Magic the Standard Poodle! He was a great guy to have around! What a gentleman! I can see why Occupaws has these poodles in training - they are just different than Labs-more elegant about everything they do!

Went to training last night and now that Casey switched foods she feels much better, so she gets to come to Camp Kachel! The kids were like "where did Magic go"? I said"we have Casey now". So Casey is adjusting well and having fun! Wait she just knocked over her bag of dog food oh no!!!

In Fact, you are doing so well with your first blog, your computer decided to help and upload a picture of Casey!!

Sincerely,

Your Computer

Switcheroo

All of Maddi's litter is now old enough (8 months) and we are switching them around with the other raisers to see what happens in new situations. Maddi is with Sonny's raisers and we have Sonny. Casey, Sparta, Finley have also switched homes for the next two weeks. It is always interesting seeing how the dogs react in different situations.

Poker for Paws.

First, Promise was a good pup and went to vote last week. The polling place was getting ready to close, so no excitement there.

Yesterday was Poker for Paws, and the pups all had a grand time. Promise enjoyed seeing all her friends and was wiped by the end of the day.

Promise and her new friend Moby resting. As you can see, Moby was all wags.

Strange things in the Northwoods

Hey Pups....

Road trip! I got to go Up North where we saw a Hodag! I think his nails should be clipped tho ~ just look at how long they are! I hope we don't meet up with him in the woods....

So we went looking for a Hodag, and instead we saw some funny looking trees. My mommy was not too happy....she said something like "those darned beaver."

I hope we don't meet up with them ~ their teeth must be as big as the Hodag's nails! Just look at the size of the trees they cut down!

Next we saw funny looking milk jugs hanging from the trees ~ how strange! I wonder if this tastes any good....maybe my mommy will give me a taste.

We couldn't go walking on the water, either....something about "black ice"....so I just hung out on the deck and watched the birds at the feeders.

Maybe next time I can go swimming up here.

Randy & Deegan's Graduation

Today was a graduation party for our second guide dog puppy, Deegan. He is now with his forever partner, Randy. It was a long ride there and back, but well worth it to see Deegan again and to watch him work.

Here is Randy & Deegan walking the last block to the restaurant

Here is Randy, Deegan and myself & Randall.

There are more photos here.

There were a lot of us at the party. Puppy raisers & friends & family of Randy. We all had a good time.

Zoo Daze

Woof, Woof!

Wilbur and I took a trip today to see Casey and Jacob! We went to a real wierd place with the funiest looking dogs I ever saw. We saw a big striped dog with big long claws. Then later we saw these big dogs that smelled funny and had bumps on their backs!

Then we saw a dog that was so big I don't see how it was able to even walk. We backed up a little when it walked toward us and stared. Casey and I wanted to talk to it a little, but everytime we thought about it, our collars got real tight so we kept our mouths shut. We all decided if we looked away and we couldn't see it, then it couldn't see us.

Later on when we were walking I saw lots of little dogs. They weren't too scary so I didn't have to talk to them. I could look right at them and just relax.

Then came the worst part. No, not the bear dogs, even though they smelled really bad - doesn't their Mom ever give them a bath??? It was when we got past the polar dogs and everybody said ---Oh, wouldn't they make cute polar bears??? NOT!!! No way was I going to....oops, oh no...argh

I LOOK DUMB!!!

Oh wait, Casey has to do it too?? Well alright! Smile you lucky bear :-)

Yuck Yuck Yuck,

Harley

Phone Home...Show

Arf All!

I had fun today!! I got to meet up with Maddi and Casey at the home show today in front of the Bruce Company display. Harley and I love Bruce Company trees best.

Then some people came up asking if I was Wilbur. It turns out that Steve and Sally gave me my name Wilbur - does that make them my god parents??? Anyhow, here we are.

Bye,
Wilbur

Casey goes to School

Hi Pups ~

I got to go to school today, and it wasn't puppy school! I visited Kromery Middle School in Middleton when my mommy gave a talk to Mrs. Festge's 7th grade class about the importance of reading. Awww...I think the kids were more interested in petting me after the class.

And most of them have a dog at home, so I think they're all going to come to our Dog Jog, Puppies on Parmenter, in May. So I'll get more petting when I see all these great kids again!

Casey

Forgetful

Woof!

You know, Harley and I have been playing so much we keep forgetting to write our blogs! So here is our week in review! First Harley got to go to visit a school in Watertown and see Divit and Geyser and lots of kids.

Then all of us got to go to Ability Days in Janesville and see lots of kids from Kindergarten to second grade. Was I tired!

Then on the way over to Nikki's to make a movie, we saw 4 buses with my picture on them!!! Here is one of them.

Then we got to Nikki's and was it BORING!!!! Some students were making a movie about OccuPaws so Mom and Dad and Nikki kept looking into lights and blah blah blah - so much human talk I fell asleep!

Love,
Wilbur
